Economic and trade situation between China and Nigeria

Nigeria, the most populous country on the African continent with a population of over 220 million, is one of the largest economies in Africa, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of around $362.8 billion in 2023. The Belt and Road Initiative has also brought tremendous opportunities for cooperation between China and Nigeria as well as between China and Africa. Nigeria is the second largest trading partner of China in Africa, and China is Nigeria's largest source of imports. According to data of Chinese customs, the bilateral trade volume between China and Nigeria reached US$23.9 billion in 2022, of which China exported US$22.3 billion to Nigeria and imported US$1.6 billion from Nigeria.

"In the first three quarters of 2023, bilateral trade amounted to $17.25 billion, with $15.67 billion exported to Nigeria and $1.58 billion imported from Nigeria, representing a 22.5% increase in imports from Nigeria compared to the same period last year. In the Lekki FTZ and Ogun-Guangdong FTZ, Chinese investors have committed more than US$1.5 billion and created more than 7,000 jobs. Nigeria, Africa's most populous country in the heart of the Gulf of Guinea, surpassed South Africa to become Africa's largest economy in 2013.

However, Nigeria has shortcomings in the fields of agriculture and manufacturing, especially the relatively weak base of agricultural production and manufacturing, which provides Chinese enterprises with export opportunities in related fields, and bilateral trade is growing rapidly. Nigeria has now become China's third largest trading partner and second largest export market in Africa, and China is Nigeria's third largest trading partner.

According to statistics, the trade volume between China and Nigeria reached US$13.6 billion in 2013, nearly five times that of 2005. According to the 2022 report of the World Bank, China's exports to Nigeria are growing at an average annual rate of 141%, and Nigeria's exports to China reached $1.61 billion in 2023. Nigeria accounted for 20% of China's total exports to Africa in 2020, and this share continues to grow, according to the report entitled The Economic Impact of Nigeria-China Trade Relations: the Way Forward from the Nigeria Summit Group.
